It’s stove thursday

Filed under: Personal — Joe Brewer @ 6:46 pm

wood burnerFinally I’ve had a wood burning stove installed in my flat. I’ve been wanting one for what seems like ages, and the sale of my classical organ has helped make this a reality. Now is a particulally good time for it to be installed as the price of oil has shot up, and it has been getting quite expensive to heat my maisonette – I use oil as there is no gas mains in my street. Unfortunately, I cannot use it tonight as I have to let the cement at the top of the chimney cure, but this should only take about 24 hours.

The install was not without it’s problems though. Two builders arrived at about 10 in the morning, and within 15 minutes it was pointed out to me that there was no lintel – this is very important as the heat weakens the bricks above the fireplace. Eventually, one of the builders went and bought a lintel and installed it. The next issue was removing the chimney liner that had been left from the oil fired boiler which was taken out a few years ago – not too much of a problem, but it did take longer than expected. At two in the afternoon, they announced that the weather wasn’t good enough to install the new chimney liner, so they were going to do a site visit just down the road in Cuckfield, and would reasess the situation. Luckily, the weather improved enough for them to continue. The last issue was getting the new chimney liner straight down to the stove – because my chimney doesn’t go straight down to the fireplace, the liner has to meet the stove at a slight angle. This doesnt bother me at the end of the day, it’s hardly noticable unless you look closely, and I think so long as it works, I’m happy. The builders left at 6.30pm after announcing that it had been the most troublesome installation this winter.

So thanks to Harridge Stoves for making my home a bit more homely and warm. Perhaps I should offer to help with your website – the frames are doing you no favours with the search engines….
