Another rewrite for my Lonely Hearts Column dating site

It’s time for my 6 monthly rewrite for my dating site. I feel I’ve really gone to town this time 🙂 Not only have I flattened loads of bugs, I’ve redesigned the look and even gone to the expense of commisioning some artwork.

I’ve also rewritten loads of the database queries as I’m now using MySQL 4.1.x – my old host (yes I’ve changed hosting providers as well) was on 4.0.x and didn’t have any plans to upgrade when I asked them a few months back, so now I can use sub queries 🙂

Now all I need is a ton of traffic. Let me know what you think of my updated lonely hearts personals site

I’ve had GAS this weekend

Filed under: General — Joe Brewer @ 2:06 pm

Gear Aquisition Syndrome that is. A term coined by musicians over at Harmony Central forum. This week I got a Yamaha EL90 which is currently situated in my spare room, although I plan to move it into my living room as it takes up too much room in the spare bedroom. It’s a really versitile instrument, even though its over 10 years old it can produce some very convincing orchestral as well as organ sounds. I’ve owned one of these organs before but sold it just after I got my three manual Johannus classical organ, but for about the last year I’ve wanted the EL90 back…. so here it is:

OK, so it’s not a great picture. I’ll take some more at a later date. I might even record some videos of me playing it and upload them to You Tube

I’ve also bought a microwave. It’s one of these combination jobs, so I’ll be able to use it as an oven and grill as well – very handy. Here it is in all it’s glory:

As well as playing with my toys this weekend, I decided to take my girlfiend upto London so that we could experience the National Gallery, which is home to Van Gogh‘s Sunflowers, as well as many other famous works of art. We also went to Convent Garden which is well known for it’s street entertainers. We weren’t dissapointed – apart from the well rehersed musicians and the Charlie Chaplin look-a-like, there was a guy that had dressed up like a statue of a roman centurian. Women were litterally queing up to have their picture taken with him while he placed a sword to their neck and pulled a funny face. I got a picture of my girlfriend with him – I cant wait to see it. The whole thing was pretty hilarious. A brilliant exersize in providing a unique service. There were a few other people being statues in the same street, but this guy was raking in a ton more cash because of the entertainment value.

More website stuff

Filed under: General — Joe Brewer @ 4:23 pm

One of the reasons that I have been so quiet recently, apart from my Big Brother experiment, is that I have been working on a new layout for my brother’s website. He had asked me to change it quite a few months ago, but I’ve had to pull my finger out in the last two weeks as he’s been visiting.

On reviewing the original code I found quite a few security holes, so these have been patched, and I’m quite pleased with the overall design. Take a look here: Historic photographic processes

Jessica learns who she will be living with

Jessica, who is secluded with Dustin and Dick, learned she’d be living with former high-school rival Carol Journey, a single 21-year-old student from Lawrence, KS.

“Oh my God! That’s mine. We’re rivals from high school, big time,” Jessica opined when she saw Carol on the monitor. Jessica further explained she and Carol stopped talking because Carol owed her $5 when they were 14. “I cannot stand her. We’re from the same small town. She talked a lot of smack and I wasn’t really into that. I just don’t know what to expect from Carol. You know girls in high school! They’re catty bitches. I mean we were at each other and stuff, we just went our separate ways.”

Jessica also thought she saw an engagement ring on Carol’s hand before Dustin pointed out it wasn’t on the right finger to be a wedding ring. “Good, because she is not loyal,” said Jessica, which brought a laugh from Dustin.

Jessica’s arch rival is sent packing

On the first eviction episode of Big Brother Jessica’s arch rival 21-year-old University of Kansas senior Carol Journey was sent packing by a whopping 10-to-1 vote.

When Carol was quizzed over Jessica saying that the confilt between them started because of a five dollar loan, she replied “She is so full of it, I can’t even handle it. I don’t remember what the conflict was about, but I doubt that $5 would ruin a three-year friendship and cause me not to talk to a person for seven years. I did not hold on to this at all, but she’s obviously still holding a grudge.”

Freecycle

Filed under: General — Joe Brewer @ 2:31 pm

I received this funny in an email today:

A friend of mine bought a new fridge for his house. To get rid of his old fridge, he put it in his front yard and hung a sign on it saying: “Free to good home. You want it, you take it.” For three days the fridge sat There without even one person looking twice at it. My friend decided that People were too untrusting of this deal. It looked too good to be true , so he changed the sign to read: “Fridge for sale £50.” The next day someone stole it.

Pretty believable if you ask me – you can’t make this kind of stuff up. The person trying to get rid of their fridge obviously hasn’t heard of freecycle – I have no trouble getting rid of my fridge freezer on there, and today I became the proud owner of a Tatung 27″ TV. The sound doesnt work for some reason, but I could always put it through my HIFI.
