Hypnosis in surgery

Filed under: Hypnosis — Joe Brewer @ 7:01 pm

I’ve just found this video on google, and it’s quite incredible. So many people think that hypnosis is a load of crap, but I think that this video will begin to change their minds. Hypnosis has been used for medical purposes for decades. The video shows a hernea operation being performed with no chemical anesthesia at all.

[googlevideo http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-6246151609103284389]

I’ll probably update this post after I’ve watched the video agai. My initial thoughts are that the patient was a very hypnotic subject – not everyone will respond in this way to the directive suggestions that were being given. However, the hypnotherapist was extremely congruent with his language, and alot of trust must have been built during the sessions before the operation.

I’m really pleased to see hypnosis being portayed in a serious light by the media 🙂

Goodbye 2007, Hello 2008

Filed under: Personal — Joe Brewer @ 6:07 pm

Well, another year has shot by without so much as a blink of an eye. Last year I never really made any resolutions, so I don’t feel that I really acheived anything worthwhile during the year. So, this year I have decided to make a list so I can see any progress. Since most people tend to over estimate what they can do in one year, but under estimate what they can do in five, I have decided to make a list for one year and five years. Here are my one year goals:

  1. Take on more hypnotherapy clients, and make a bigger difference in people’s lives.
  2. Help people at The Olive Tree.
  3. Blog more often. I’ve actually won a new motorola KRZR phone in a competition at work (a major upgrade from my ancient Nokia 6310), so I’ll be able to add more pictures, and maybe videos.
  4. Start trading domains. I seem to have recently aquired so many domains, that I think it might be a good idea to start trading. Some of the domains I have I havent used at all for several years. I’ve been a member of dnforum for nearly a year, but I’ve never made any posts, so I think it’s bout time to start.
  5. I’ve been meaning to go through the eight CD set of Michel Thomas French course for what seems like years. Since I work in a muli-cultural environment, I think it would be a good idea to stretch my brain with this.
  6. Lastly, I would like to think that I could start paying my mortgage using money that I am making through affiliate marketing. Currently I’m only just about breaking even with the domain names and hosting.

So there’s my one year goals. Too much, we’ll see. My only five year goal is to pay the mortgage of the house that I am living in at the time – whether this is too big of a goal, only time will tell.

Before I sign off, just want to mention that Kylie was fantastic on last night’s Jools Holland Hootanany – she obviously loves singing with live bands 🙂

Anyway, happy new year readers!

How to get private registration free for your new domains

What is private registation?

When you register a domain, your personal details along with contact details for admin, technical and billing are stored in a global internet database. These details can be viewed by anyone by looking up their “whois” data at sites like www.domaintools.com. If you private register your domains, your personal details will not show up in the whois database. Instead, anyone looking up details of a domain will be presented with a screen like this:

whois data

Normally this would cost $8.99 per year with domains by proxy.

Why should you private register your domains?

Private registration helps to reduce spam, fraud, stalkers and worse by keeping your name, address, email and phone number private.

So how do I get this for free?

www.GoDaddy.com offer free private registration when you buy five or more new .COM, .NET, .INFO, .BIZ, .NAME, .MOBI, .ORG or .WS domains.

The quickest way to regsiter the domains is to choose bulk registration from the domains menu. Either type the chosen domain names into the text box with the extension, or type them without the extension and check one of the check boxes to choose com, net, info or biz extensions. Type in the four digit access code and press GO.

bulk register domains

If the names are currently free, then you will be offered standard, deluxe or protected plans. Choose standard as this is the cheapest – the other plans include private registration which we will be getting this free anyway. Select the option to checkout and click on the orange continue button.

standard registration

The next screen is where you add private registration. By each domain name there is an option to select private registration:

Select Private for all of the domains in your cart and click on the orange “Update Cart” button. This will add several more lines to your order for the private registration – all of the lines will be at zero cost. You can now check out with your free private registration on your domain names.

Crap user experience with talktalk’s new webmail application

Filed under: Rants — Joe Brewer @ 7:42 pm

Having used talktalk’s new webmail application for a few weeks now, I can honestly say it gives a bad user experience.

Their old webmail application was very simple, straightforward and very fast. There was a choise of different interfaces you could choose from which where dependent on your choise of browser. I always choose the simple interface as it was easy to use and very fast, but there were options for slicker interfaces that used AJAX.

Now I don’t have a choise. I put in my username and password, and I am subjected to a splash screen – something that I hate seeing with web applications. I think this is probably because I expect web applications to be fine tuned so that they can run efficiently in different browsers.

When the splashscreen disappears, I get an irritating voice saying “You have mail!”, and then I get todays news. What the f*** do I want the news for?! I’ve just logged into my webmail account to get my mail… grrr. Usually, this screen takes a while to load as it contacts an ad server to display an advert which must take up about an 8th of the screen – yet more time wasted.

Only then can I click on “inbox” and read my mail. However, this isn’t the end! When I click on a mail that I want to read, I am once again presented with a page loading splash screen – what a load of s***.

Sorry talktalk, but your webmail service is the pits.

A tip for anyone that is planning to change blog software

Filed under: General — Joe Brewer @ 8:39 pm

A number of months ago I decided to change my blog software from Seredipity to WordPress, however I forgot to change my rss feed at Feedburner. This meant that I now have 0 subscribers to my blog via feedburner. Actually, I’m not sure how many I had before…. hmm, I’m sure it was more than 0 before!

So, here’s the thing. I am embarking on a new experiment to see if I can up my readership so that awstats reports 200 unique visitors a day by the end January. I guess it’s probably not going to be that hard… I’m currently around the 70 mark plus or minus 10. So, how am I going to up my visitors? Well, I think it’s going to come down to regular posting and pinging so that more people are aware of me. I think I probably need to take more of a direction with the blog as well, rather than meandering through different topics.

Let’s see what happens.
